Viksit Odisha by 2036: Govt to Develop 35 Strategic Road Corridors
In a major step towards achieving the vision of Viksit Odisha by 2036, the state government has unveiled an ambitious master plan to develop 35 strategic road corridors spanning over 6,100 km. This comprehensive network will include 2,700 km of non-national highways, 2,800 km of NH arterial roads, 600 km of inter-corridor links, and 1,500 km of feeder roads for last- and first-mile connectivity.
This large-scale infrastructure push aligns with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s promise of transforming Odisha’s highways to meet global standards, with road projects worth over ₹2 lakh crore already underway.
Access-controlled highways, ring roads, and bypasses in urban areas will be prioritised to enhance connectivity to key economic zones, production hubs, and socially significant areas. The newly formed Odisha State Highway Authority (OSHA) will spearhead planning and execution, with dedicated powers for project approvals, cost sanctions, and land acquisition.
The plan also includes:
- A separate engineering cadre under a revamped design directorate
- Formation of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for technical oversight
- Creation of unified labs for quality control in partnership with premier institutes like IIT-Bhubaneswar, NIT-Rourkela, VSSUT, and OUTR
Funding will involve both central and private sources, including an estimated ₹75,000 crore allocation over five years under the road infrastructure head. The initiative marks a crucial leap toward building a modern, well-connected Odisha.
