Two Artists Create Nagarjuna Idols Out Of Matchsticks And Popsicle Sticks

Two artists Saswat Ranjan Sahoo and Biswajeet Nayak from Puri have created Nagarjuna idols of Lord Jagannath respectively. While Saswat had created an idol of lord Jagannath with matchsticks and got selected for India Book of Records a few days ago, he mentions that he has created the new one again with matchsticks by adding ‘khanda’, ‘chhuri’, ‘bagha nakha mali’, ‘nakuasi’ which is worn in nose, ‘haridamali’, ‘bajraghanti’, ‘katidhala’, ‘katari’, ‘handia’, ‘dadhi, ‘shreehastapada’, ‘nagaphula, ‘era pakhi para’, ‘shankha chakra’, ‘bagarakha’, ‘surya’, ‘chandra’, ‘nagatati’ and ‘olamali’. He expresses, “I created this idol during a time when devotees are not allowed to visit the temple and see the lord.Saswat’s idol consists of 11,516 matchsticks approximately.

Similarly, Biswajeet’s creation has popsicle sticks in it. The measurement goes by 40″ x 25″.  Earlier, Biswajeet has bagged a place in India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records. He says, “After 25 years, the Nagarjuna Besha of the lord will be observed. This holds great importance for me. To make the occasion memorable, I created this idol.” He has used 3575 popsicle sticks to make the idol.
