Top 5 lesser-known temples to visit in Bhubaneswar

Odisha is a land of some of the magnificent architectural marvels. The rich culture and
heritage of the State is reflected through its temples which are specimens of the Kalingan
style of architecture. The capital city of Bhubaneswar is home to over 700 majestic temples.
Called as the Temple City, Bhubaneswar is a history lover’s delight with its archaeological
marvels some of which date back to the early 7 th century.

Beyond the popular temples such as Lingaraj and Mukteswar, there are many little-known
archaeological gems which are unique in their own way. MyCityLinks lists out five such pre-
eminent temples that are a must-visit during your trip to Bhubaneswar.

  1. Raja Rani Temple

Known for its beautiful surroundings, the temple is also the venue for one of the most famous
cultural extravaganzas in Odisha – the Rajarani Music Festival. What makes this temple
unique is the fact that there are no idols in the sanctum santorum. Many people have made
interpretations to understand which deity it is dedicated to, from the carvings on the walls of
the monument. Formerly named as Indreswar Temple, it was constructed around 12th
century. Over the years, the temple has become a symbol of love for the locals.

2. Parashurameswar Temple

Parashurameswar holds a special significance for being one of the oldest temples in the city.
It is said to be the first temple to have a Jagamohana or the entrance hall along with the main
sanctum. It also has eight grahas carved on the walls, while most temples constructed in the
later era have nine. The most astounding fact about the shrine is that it is the first temple in
Odisha to have the marks of saptamatrika (7 divine forms of Shakti). The temple was
constructed during the 7th century.

3. Chausathi Yogini Temple

Of the four surviving temples of the Yogini cult in India, two are situated in Odisha, one in
Balangir district and the other in Bhubaneswar. Chausathi Yogini temple is located on the
outskirts of the Capital City. Yoginis worshipped in this shrine are believed to be the
incarnations of Shakti. The shrine stands in the open without a roof as the tantric rituals
practiced here involve worshipping the five elements of nature. The temple is a representation
of feminine vigour. It was discovered among the ruins by prominent historian Kedarnath
Mohapatra in 1953.

4. Brahma Mandir

There are a few temples in India where Lord Brahma – the God of creation is worshipped.
This is what makes Brahma Mandir special and unique. It is situated on the banks of
Bindusagar near Lingaraj temple. The shrine is maintained by the local priests who ensure
that prayers happen every day. The scenic beauty around the temple during sunset is
something you should not miss out during your visit.

5. Baitala Deula Temple

It is one of the ancient monuments standing tall in Odisha. Most people aren’t aware of its
unique architecture. The temple’s most salient feature is the shape of its deula or the
sanctuary tower. Unlike most temples in the city, it has three spires on the top. The temple
has artistic sculptures carved on the walls and gates. As you walk around examining the
shrine, you will notice how the artisans successfully displayed the divinity with every
engraving. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Chamunda.

There is no better place to communicate with the fascinating history, culture and tradition
than Bhubaneswar. Don’t miss out these glorious monuments of this ancient city when you
plan your travel itinerary.
