The Unfiltered Story Behind the Instagram Filters

The Unfiltered Story Behind the Instagram Filters

In the earlier days of Instagram, users only had a handful of photo filters to choose from, but with the boom of social media and a photo revolution happening thanks to the cameras on our smartphones, those days are behind. Now you can browse through countless filters to enhance your photos and story.

Instagram filters have become a go-to tool for Instagram bloggers, influencers and celebrities to build their own personal brand, create a cohesive profile look and gain recognition. Most Instagram handles have carefully curated content and photo filters add a layer of sophistication to it.

The craze for having a personal Instagram filter has reached Odisha recently. It has been trending for quite some time now and has attracted audiences with its varied options.

Shweta Choudhury is the first Odia blogger to get her own filter. She released it on July 12 this year. Being a Potterhead, she decided to create a ‘Harry Potter ThisThat’ filter. This ubiquitous filter comes in two alternatives from the Harry Potter genre.

She talked to My City Links about the filter and said, “I decided to make a Harry Potter This or That game using SparkAR Studio. People all over the world are using it now and I couldn’t be happier about it.” She further iterated that it was a great way to genuinely attract an audience to your handle. She plans to make more filters keeping in mind the ongoing trends and something that would be fun for people. This would give her exposure to a wider audience across the globe.

Namrata Parija is a well-known actor and social media personality who got her own filter named Fresh Look on July 14. She was a TikTok star before the Chinese app got banned and her look on one of her videos gained immense popularity because of her makeup. This is how her filter came into existence.

She said, “I wanted to make a filter that all girls can use and get a complete makeover. This is just for fun. I’m working on my second filter which represents the amount of strength and patience required to tackle the cruelty in this world. It will really be great.”

Lovina Nayak, a blogger and entrepreneur, had been planning to get her own filter for some time now, but due to her busy schedule, she got it just recently. Her filter, Dusky Love, represents love for oneself the way one is. Contrary to most of the filters which make a person look fairer, her filter does not change your skin tone but rather shows you in your best self.

Her filter does not change your tone but rather makes you look pretty with a little glimmer, light makeup and grayish eye colour. It is a unisex filter. She explained the idea behind the filter and said, “I always wanted to create cute and dreamy filters for myself, but my motive was that my first filter should be the way I am. I don’t have to look ‘fair and lovely’ to be termed as ‘pretty’. That is what I have always been very vocal about and I encourage people around me to love their own self first, in their own skin.”

Prakruti Mishra, who has always been active with new trends, is not lagging behind in this either. She has her own filter named after her, Prakruti. This filter gives you green eyes and a greenish tinge on the nose. With this, she encourages her fans and followers to go green, a much-needed initiative at this hour of climate change and environmental degradation.

Odisha has always been foremost in adopting all current trends in an innovative and creative style. This has again proved the versatile choices of filters that Odias have chosen. With the pandemic taking a toll on people each and every day, you can try out these amazing filters from our very own people and upgrade your feed and stories. Happy Instagramming!
