Sudarsan Pattnaik Creates History as First Indian to Win UK’s Fred Darrington British Sand Master Award
In a proud moment for India, acclaimed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik from Odisha has become the first Indian to be honoured with the prestigious Fred Darrington British Sand Master Award in the United Kingdom.
The award was presented to Pattnaik for his magnificent 10-foot sand sculpture of Lord Ganesha, symbolizing the universal message of world peace. This recognition took place during the Sandworld 2025 International Sand Art Festival in Weymouth, Dorset.
The award was conferred by the Mayor of Weymouth, Jon Orwell, in the presence of notable dignitaries including Mark Andersen, Director of Sandworld; David Hicks, Co-founder of the Festival; and Naorem J. Singh, Minister for Culture.
A recipient of the Padma Shri, Sudarsan Pattnaik has represented India in over 65 international sand art festivals and championships, earning global recognition for his artistic brilliance and impactful themes.
