Rising Music Sensation, Gaurav Anand
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer.” Here, we are talking about such a dreamer who once dreamed of achieving something in the field of Music. We are talking about the rising music sensation of Odisha, Gaurav Anand. Although this name is not new to the Odia entertainment industry, Gaurav has come into limelight recently after beautifully composing multiple songs for Odia projects like ‘Premam’, ‘DaMan’, ‘Rakta Tirtha’, and so on. His hits include ‘Nichatia Mana’, ‘Ek Chala Re’, ‘Nishartha’, ‘Rahi Rahi Aji Kiye Mate Daake’, among others.
Starting his career with a music video titled ‘Nirabata’ released 5 years ago, Gaurav has sung under almost all the frontline music composers of Odisha. In this exclusive interview, Gaurav shares his thoughts on his recent success, his journey in the music industry, the key elements to make a song successful, and his upcoming projects. Below are the excerpts from the interview.
How are you taking the success and popularity that you have gained in the last few months?
I am extremely happy about all the buzz and hype around, but at the same time, I am trying to remain calm and focused on my next work so that I won’t disappoint the audience.
Has your musical journey been tough?
By God’s grace, I have never really struggled or asked for work. Work has been constantly flowing my way. The only thing that was tough was to convince my parents that I wanted to be in the field of music. Every typical Indian parent would want their children to do well or get a job and get settled. Helping them understand was a bit difficult, but ultimately they understood when I started getting work.
Who are the singers or composers you look up to?
There are many singers and composers I look up to, and I have learned something or the other from each and everyone. The list is too long to name.
Can you tell us about the process of composing a song in short?
Firstly, the story is narrated, and after the context and the brief is given, the actual work starts. It’s done in two ways actually, either the lyrics are given or first the melody is composed, and then the lyrics are written around it. Once the tune and the lyrics are locked, we move on to the music arrangements and the programming part.
What are the key elements needed to make a song win the audience’s heart?
There’s no formula to make a hit song. All one needs to do is the thing which you one is given, with proper honesty, and nothing else, that will automatically click with the audience.
Has your family been supportive? Is there anyone in the field of art in your family?
My parents and family have always been supportive of whatever I do. My grandfather has written many songs, he was also a playwright and a dramatist. My father also sings very well and plays the harmonium.
How have digital platforms helped you?
The prevalence of digital media has definitely helped me reach people and bring forth my talent to the world.
What are your upcoming projects?
There are three movies in the pipeline now, and a few other works are in talks.
How many music videos have you composed or sung until today? Which one of your compositions is the closest to your heart?
I actually don’t keep count of how many songs I have done, but amongst the ones I have been a part of, my favorites would be ‘Cape Chaa’, ‘Nirabata’, and ‘Syaahi’, because the journey of making these songs would always be special and every song is a surprise. That excites me.
What is your message for aspiring singers and composers?
As a person, I would like to say that follow your passion, do what makes you happy, and success will follow.
