Puri’s Golden Beach Gets Coveted Blue Flag Tag

In an honour that is going to boost the tourism potential of Odisha, the Golden Beach in Puri received the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ tag on Sunday.

The certification was awarded by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) for the stringent environmental norms and world class sustainable tourist amenities at the beach. This important eco-label will aid in the process of making Puri a World Heritage City and a world-class tourist destination.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik wrote that he was happy that Golden Beach in Puri has received the much sought after certification.

Puri Collector Balwant Singh congratulated the people and officials who played a crucial role in maintaining proper sanitation through Mo Beach and other intensive campaigns in the past.

Earlier, the Centre had recommended the Golden Beach in Puri to the International Jury of Denmark for the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ certification for the forthcoming tourist season under the Beach Environment and Aesthetic Management System (BEAMS) program.

The Golden Beach was among the eight beaches in India which have been nominated by the Centre for the Blue Flag tag. These include Shivrajpur in Gujarat, Ghoghla in Daman & Diu, Kasarkod and Padubidri in Karnataka, Kappad in Kerala, Rushikonda in Andhra Pradesh and Radhanagar in Andaman and Nicobar.

FEE is a non-profit NGO that promotes sustainable development via environmental education through its five programs — Blue Flag, Eco-Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE), Learning About Forests (LEAF) and Green Key International.

FEE has members from 77 countries around the world.
