Picturesque Dams Of Odisha

Picturesque Dams Of Odisha

A dam that is a well-liked tourist destination results in the emergence of stores, hotels, and eateries nearby. The proprietors of these businesses relocate nearby, increasing the population density and changing the region’s demographics. The construction of an artificial reservoir typically increases the area’s tourism appeal and an economic growth

The vast area of water held in dams is monitored by a variety of people including those who are in charge of irrigation and power generation. The reservoir holds potential to quickly become the center of adventure tourism. To develop adventure sports, entertainment venues, hotels and resorts, food courts, theme parks, the scenic splendor of the state’s major reservoirs can be used. At various dam sites, the Water Resources Department has made the decision to encourage tourism by building infrastructure through public-private partnerships.

Let’s have a look at some of the incredible dams of Odisha’s :

Hirakud Dam

The Hirakud Dam is located In the Sambalpur district of Odisha. It is the longest earthen dam in the world and is built across the powerful river Mahanadi. It is the country’s first significant multifunctional river valley project after India’s independence in 1947.

The Hirakud ropeway is situated 15 kilometers from the town of Sambalpur and close to the Hirakud dam. The ropeway connects the Gandhi minar with the Jawaharlal Nehru garden. There are 12 cabins on the ropeway, each of which can accommodate four guests. The cost of a roundtrip ticket is $60 (I think it should be Rs). Visitors can ride the ropeway between 10 am and 6 pm every day except Monday. It is a well-liked vacation spot in Sambalpur.

Indravati Dam

The Indravati Dam offers a sight to behold with a vast stretch of azure water enclosed by a green crowned hill. Located some 130 km from Bhawanipatna, the dam is constructed on the Indravati river and is serving presently as the largest power producing dam in the eastern region of the country. Apart from this, the dam is also a prominent sightseeing place in Odisha because of its picturesque surroundings. Nurtured by nature, the place is one of the leading picnic spots for locals as well as tourists. A large number of tourists come here every day to spend some quality time in the lap of nature. If you love photography, then this place will surely give you some exotic sceneries to capture in your lenses. With the drizzle of rain in the monsoon season, the beauty of the place, especially the rich greenery, becomes exuberant which makes monsoon the best time to visit Indravati Dam. So, for all those looking for a place in Odisha to spend some quality time with family and friends, Indravati Dam is surely a worthy consideration.

Rengali Dam

Odisha is the home of the Rengali Dam. Within lovely surroundings, the river Brahmani hides the Rengali dam reservoir. It is 92 kilometers away from Angul and a peaceful place to visit. The Rengali Multipurpose Project was built to offer amenities for irrigation, flood control, and power generation. The Rengali Dam is 1040 m long and 70.5 m high. Its free catchment area is between the dam and the barrage, which is 4780 km (It probably is sq km. Also 4780 sq km is a very large area, so please verify the number). The devastation caused by floods in the districts of Dhenkanal, Jajpur, and Kendrapara has been greatly reduced thanks to reservoir routing. The average annual rainfall in the area is 1570 millimeters and the attractive features of Rengali dam are many picnic spots which are worth visiting.

Suradaghai Dam

Saroda Reservoir, also known as Soradaghai locally, is a well-known tourist destination for people of all ages due to its breathtaking beauty and tranquil surroundings. This alluring reservoir, which was constructed across the river Padma, dates back to the late 19th century. Around 80 kilometers from Berhampur, the Sorada Reservoir is noted for giving a delightful appeal that makes it a popular picnic location in the area. Another one of the main draws of the area is the breathtaking sunset vista that can be seen from the Saroda Reservoir. In addition to sunsets, the location also has a picturesque environment surrounded by lush mountains, making it the perfect venue for photographers.

Sapua Dam

The check (I think it should be snake shaped. Please check) reservoir is located in the Hindol block of the Dhenkanal district, around 90 kilometers from Bhubaneswar. This concrete barrage’s architectural framework is designed in the form of a snake. Even it’s ‘Sapua,’ literally means ‘snake-like’. This dam is overwhelmingly beautiful. Every picnic season the dam draws thousands of visitors. The dam was initially constructed by the Water Resource Department of Odisha across a local nallah called “Sapua” beneath the Mahanadi basin as a medium irrigation project.

This and the reservoir’s renaming as the ‘Sapua Dam’ were related in a reciprocal manner. In 2006 when the dam was finished. Once a forbidding environment, this region is now a visitor’s favorite for camping, sightseeing, and picnics. It also has an advantage because of the nearby lush sal forest. Families from all over the state travel here to take in the picturesque splendor of the area and to spend some quality time together.
