‘Phalguna Chaitra’: A Closer Look
I always find it relatively easy to express my thoughts on films ranging from mediocre to excellent. However, truly exceptional works leave me speechless, and Phalguna Chaitra is one of those masterpieces. Its stunning execution, poetic essence, and flawless craftsmanship left me in awe. This film is a perfect blend of visual splendor and artistic brilliance, creating an unforgettable cinematic experience.
The director duo Sisir Kumar Sahu and Peenakee Singh Rajput, who are known for original content and visual storytelling, display remarkable finesse in utilizing characters, properties, and elements throughout Phalguna Chaitra. The film captivates viewers with its unique allure, despite some scenes feeling unnecessarily prolonged. However, it skillfully intertwines music, sensitivity, and sensuality without any hint of vulgarity, resulting in a harmonious cinematic experience. In the near future, it will be unmistakable to identify a Sisir-Peenakee film simply by glancing at its poster or trailer. They are on the verge of establishing a defining benchmark that sets them apart.
The film unfolds in captivating locations around Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Jeypore that defies imagination, immersed in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. Rudrakant Singh’s cinematography brilliantly captures the essence of this picturesque setting. It serves as a mesmerizing canvas, complemented by a compelling narrative and an exquisite score by Jerry Silvester Vincent. Kudos to the film’s producer, Sakti Jagdev, for having the courage to believe in this young team with their refreshing approach to filmmaking and investing in their talent.
At its core, this film celebrates the virtues cherished by an Odia family, weaving a captivating narrative around a significant incident during the revered months of ‘Phalguna Chaitra.’ The team’s commitment to authenticity shines through, showcasing the distinctive Odia culture that strikes a chord with every household. From treasured moments with grandparents to the shared joy of family meals, the film beautifully captures these timeless elements, evoking a deep sense of familiarity.
In the wake of cinematic gems like Daman and Pratikshya, the audience is bestowed with yet another compelling narrative in this film. It comes as no surprise that a renowned writer like Dr. Sulagna Mohanty has delivered yet another original story, for which we eagerly anticipated. The dialogue and the screenplay by Pranab Prasanna Rath is like cherry on the top.
The cast of this film plays a pivotal role in portraying the narrative with utmost brilliance. Choudhary Jayprakash Das effortlessly embodies the character of Jeje, showcasing his immense talent once again. Partha Sarathi Ray brings a refreshing realism to the role of Kabya, delivering dialogues and expressions devoid of excessive melodrama. B M Baisali shines as Ananya, infusing the film with heart and authenticity, while Ananya Mishra’s portrayal of Smruti adds a captivating soul to the story. Sukant Rath captures the essence of a doctor through impeccable body language and dialogue delivery. Pranab Prasanna Rath captivates as Kanha, Jeje’s dependable companion.
‘Phalguna Chaitra’ has five songs. The lead character’s name Smruti, has been beautifully used in the song ‘Smruti Buni Jae Jibana’, among all other songs I can still feel the aura of the song around me. I like the fact that all the lyrics of the songs of this film have only Odia words in it. They are not fillers rather they carry the story forward.
I may have talked about the scenes in detail but as the film is still at the theaters I don’t want to give any spoilers. But yes I can say that as you exit the cinema hall, the haunting background score lingers in your mind, leaving you with a bittersweet emotional experience.
