Odisha’s World Skill Centre Inaugurated To Become Skill Hub


Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated a 18-storey World Skill Centre (WSC), a premier advance skill training institute, in the capital city on the occasion of Panchayati Raj Diwas – 5th March, 2021. The World Skill Centre is an 18 storey building which is aimed to make Odisha the global capital of trained manpower and is dedicated to different skills and trades.

Speaking on the occasion, Naveen praised the rapid strides in skill development that Odisha had taken in the last five years. So this initiative by the government is a medium to encourage the youth by creating new avenues for them to compete with their counterparts across the globe and making them globally employable.

It is aimed at accelerating advance skill training to the youth of India, thereby preparing them to compete at a global level. With a vision to impart advanced skill training to working population of the State and promote ‘Skilled-in-Odisha’ as a global brand, WSC has been set up by the government. 

The WSC is modelled around leading TVET Institute, ITE (Institute of Technical Education) Singapore. It has been set up with a budget of around Rs 1342.2 crore with capital investment shared by Asian Development Bank. The first set of courses in areas like Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Mechanical & Electrical Services, Vertical Transportation, Precision Engineering, Mechatronics, and Electrical Technology along with a few other courses in the services sectors like Hair Fashion & Design and Beauty & Wellness, are all ready to be rolled out for the youth. This Centre will serve as a ‘Centre for Industry Partnership’ for Industries across Odisha.

Premananda Nayak, Minister for Skill Development and Technical Education; Subroto Bagchi, Chairman, OSDA; SC Mohapatra, Chief Secretary; Kenichi Yokoyama, DG, Asian Development Bank; Bruce Poh, CEO, ITEES; Sanjay Kumar Singh, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, SD & TE and other industry leaders graced the event.
