Odisha Farmer Grows World’s Costliest Miyazaki Mango

The heat of the summers sure makes people swoon but if anyone can find one reason to love summer days, the answer will be the variety of fruits that is available during this season. And what is more mouth-watering than mangoes? But little have people ever heard of a mango which costs up to Rs 2.5 to Rs. 3 lakh per kilogram. Chandru Satya Narayan, a farmer from Nilathar village of Bargarh district in Odisha, has grown this mango named Miyazaki, organically, which is the world’s costliest mango. 

50-year-old Chandru, who lives at Nilathar village 130 km away from Bargarh district headquarters, had brought the seed of Miyazaki mango from Bangladesh three years ago.  He has created a buzz in the district. He has also motivated the youth for farming with his successful endeavour. 

Addressing the media Chandru has stated that he was very happy as he was able to grow the seed into a tree successfully. He also appealed to the state government to help him market the mangoes.

Mango is an important fruit crop of Odisha as it occupies 60% of the fruit cultivation area of the state. But the productivity of mango is 5.68 metric tons per hectare, as compared to the national productivity of 8.65 metric tons per hectare. According to the reports on the Indian economy in the fiscal year 2019, mangoes from Odisha accounted for almost 19 billion Indian rupees.
