Odia Boys And Girls Win Bronze At 40th Junior National Kho Kho Championship

The 40th Junior National Kho Kho Championship 2021 concluded in Odisha on Sunday. After a grueling competition, Maharashtra clinched the women’s and the men’s titles in the finals defeating Kolhapur and Delhi respectively. The Championship witnessed exciting matches over the five-day event with semifinals and finals particularly creating an electrifying atmosphere with nail-biting matches that kept spectators glued to their seats.

Hosts Odisha finished in the third position alongside West Bengal and Karnataka in the men’s and women’s events respectively to clinch the bronze. It was a big improvement for Odisha as they had finished 5th and 13th in the women’s and men’s events respectively at the previous edition held in 2019. Both the boys and the girls team put up impressive performances and won the audience’s heart. Their skills and grit was appreciated and lauded by everyone.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the teams on the win and wished them the best for future endeavours via tweet.

Minister for Sports and Youth Services, Tusharkanti Behera congratulated both the boys and the girls teams for their impressive performances and wrote on Twitter that he was proud of their performance.

Secretary, Sports and Youth Services Department, Vineel Krishna also congratulated both the teams on Twitter and wrote that the girls team displayed great fighting spirit in a closely contested semi-final and the boys team put up a great show in their bronze medal match. 

The men’s tournament witnessed a close encounter between the defending champion Maharashtra and Delhi. The latter team, qualifying to its first ever finals in the tournament, fought hard but Maharashtra eventually managed to win the title by a margin of two points and an inning. In the women’s event, Maharashtra defeated Kolhapur by three points to retain their title as champions. 

The tournament also saw some incredible performances from the young Kho Kho stars. While the Best Chaser award among the boys went to Odisha’s Pabani Sarkar, among the girls, Maharashtra’s Vrushali Bhoye won it. Ritik of Delhi and Vaishnavi Pawar of Kolhapur bagged the Best Defender awards respectively among the boys and the girls. The Best Player awards went to Aditya Kudale among boys and Ashwini Shinde of Maharashtra among girls.

Cash prizes to the tune of Rs. 15,20,000 for the winners, runners-up, third place finishers, and individual awardees were announced.  Rs 3 Lakhs for each winner, Rs 2 lakhs for runners-up and Rs 1 lakh each for third position finishers were awarded. Rs 20,000 was awarded to each individual awardee.

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra tackled Odisha, and Delhi triumphed over West Bengal in the men’s event to march into the finals. Similarly, in the women’s event Maharashtra defeated Odisha, and Kolhapur beat Karnataka to secure their berth in the finals. The semi-final between Maharashtra and Odisha turned out to be one of the most thrilling encounters in the tournament that had to be decided by a minimum chase after the teams were tied at the end of regulation.

The Final match was attended by a host of dignitaries including Chief Guest, Shridhar Patra, Chairman, NALCO, along with Guests of Honour, Commissioner- cum-Secretary, Government of Odisha, R. Vineel Krishna;  Director Sports, KIIT University, Gaganendu Dash and Secretary General, Kho Kho Federation of India, M.S. Tyagi.

This outstanding event was put together at a short notice, at the state-of-the-art Biju Patnaik Indoor Stadium, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, brought together athletes from across the country and has proved to be a great cultural and sporting exchange.

The 40th edition of the Junior National Kho Kho Championship held from September 22-26, 2021 saw over 600 athletes from 53 participating teams from states and union territories vying for the crown in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. This national championship was hosted by the Odisha Kho Kho Association with support from the Sports and Youth Services Department, Government of Odisha, and KIIT (deemed University) under the aegis of the Kho Kho Federation of India.  

The national championship will serve as the qualifier for the 4th Khelo India Youth Games to be held in Panchkula (Haryana) next year.
