Mo Sahay, A Job Info App For Migrant Workers

Mo Sahay, A Job Info App For Migrant Workers

Since the lockdown was announced for COVID- 19 pandemic, an exodus of migrant workers to their native places has been going on. So far, 5,07,093 Odia migrants have returned to Odisha from different parts of India. Helping these migrants to get livelihood opportunities is now a serious challenge.

A group of like-minded people which includes professors, engineering students and industry professionals has come up with an online application ‘Mo Sahay’ (www.mosahay.org) to help these migrants find work and return to their worksites.

Professor Debi Prasad Dogra of IIT-Bhubaneswar who is heading the team shared, “We have developed a platform to help the migrant workers. We have been doing this voluntarily for the last couple of months. While discussing the steps that could be taken to help the migrants, we came up with a plan to develop a portal to help migrant workers returning from other states.”

The application is a cross-platform interface which can be accessed through mobile phones and computers. It is a survey, where one would enter their skill details and basic health information among others.  Based on that information, we are generating clusters of skilled workers district wise depending on the requirements, he said.

The migrants can use the app in Hindi, English or Odia for their registration and furnish basic details like name, age, gender, mobile phone number, address and skills.

Considering the demands in the present scenario, the application would help the employers to get information on migrants, their skills and immunity before employing them. The platform provides two sets of information through two simple forms, skill cum health card. The application can store information of about 308 most demanded skills across 24 industries.

“We thought of collecting all the data through the registration and then to pass on their information to government departments, or to the respective industries so that these people could go back to their work as quickly as possible, said Prof Dogra.

The group is in talks with CII and FICCI for the collaboration.
