Kajol’s Odissi Avatar In Tribhanga Impresses Odias
Bollywood actress Kajol is back on screen and this time she is seen donning the elaborate costume of an Odissi dancer in the Netflix release ‘Tribhanga’. Her looks and poise as an Odissi dancer has taken Odias by storm and has delightfully charmed everyone. Instagramers are teeming with pride and have shared the trailer widely and praised Kajol’s looks.
Tribhanga is directed by actress Renuka Sahane and produced by Ajay Devgn. It stars Tanvi Azmi, Mithila Palkar and Kunal Roy Kapoor as main leads. It tells the story of love, hate and struggle among three women in a family. The film is scheduled to release on January 15, 2021 on Netflix.
Tribhanga is one of the most graceful poses in Odissi and it means the three bends of the pose which depict movement and give the dancer rhythm and energy. In the trailer Kajol is seen explaining the meaning of the poses Abhanga, Samabhanga and Tribhanga and equates them with her mother, sister and herself. This is a metaphor for the women who have their own quirks and characteristics and yet are loving, beautiful and unique in their own ways.

Sikata Sitiratna, an advocate and a trained Odissi dancer who watched the trailer shared her first thoughts and said, “I am impressed with the way they have used aspects of Odissi dance to tell the story of the movie and its characters. Using the meanings of some of the fundamental poses of Odissi to describe the traits of a woman and how she deals with life and different relationships and circumstances is a very unique way of telling the story in Indian cinema. Odissi is a beautiful dance and Kajol looks immaculate in the traditional costume.”
“I am happy to see that this movie is coming out on Netflix as it will help in taking Odissi to newer audiences around the world which is important for traditional art forms. I am excited and will be waiting to watch the movie when it releases,” she added further. Tribhanga is already the talk of the town and Odias, especially the younger audiences are going gaga to see Kajol in this new avatar.

Echoing similar sentiments, Mohammed Rehan, a Bhubaneswar based multipreneur who shared the trailer on Instagram, expressed his thoughts and said, “I shared the trailer because I felt we should do our bit in taking our culture to a global audience. Netflix is a huge platform with a global reach and seeing Odissi get its due share of screen time is great. At a time when Odisha doesn’t get much of the mainstream media’s attention even though we have so much to envy for, this has come as a breath of fresh air.”
What has captivated everyone’s attention is the association of an A-list bollywood star like Kajol with a traditional art form of Odisha on a global platform like Netflix. Subhra Mohanty, an architect, shared her happiness and said, “I love it because Odissi has never been represented like this before and it seems like it is the language of the movie through which it communicates with the audience. I am excited about two things in the movie and they are Odissi and the amazing cast.” Let us know in the comments what you think of Kajol’s new avatar as an Odissi dancer.
