Government Schools’ Dilemma Over Lack Of Enrollments

Government schools are a boon to children in rural areas and microinterios of the state. However, having a school in such places is just the beginning. The functioning of the school and the number of enrolments is the big challenge. As less students enrol in these areas, it becomes difficult to manage the infrastructure. In order to make improvements in the state’s education, Odisha government would be overtaking 7,722 schools.

As informed by School and Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash in the state assembly, out of 14,382 schools in Odisha having student strength less than 40, are supposed to merge 7,722 schools. “In doing so, the state government is only trying to improve the teaching environment and impart quality education. It has been decided to revise the decision on the merger of schools in scheduled areas of the state,” said Dash.

He further added, “The merger has been decided to happen with school strength less than 15 and not 20 as it was earlier decided for such regions. Even MLAs can give suggestions in writing that schools should not be closed due to communication problems.”

However, the opposition stated its counter statement by saying, “Education is the fundamental right of a student and schools should not be closed.
