Gold Reserves Discovered in 18 Locations Across Odisha

A recent geological survey has revealed the presence of gold reserves at 18 locations across Odisha, primarily in tribal-dominated and economically backward districts. The gold deposits have been identified in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Boudh, and Angul.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI), in collaboration with the State Geological Department, conducted an extensive study to map these resources. Interestingly, high-grade platinum deposits have also been discovered in the mineral-rich Keonjhar district, further adding to the state’s vast mineral wealth.

Key Gold Deposit Locations

The survey highlights significant gold reserves in multiple districts, with the highest concentrations found in:

Keonjhar: Aradangi, Dimirmuda, Telkoi, Gopura, Gajaipur, Saleikana, Singpur, and Kusakala.

Mayurbhanj: Suleipat, Suruda, Jashipur, and Suriaguda.

Mining Interest and Challenges

The first aerial survey to assess gold reserves in Odisha was conducted in 2007, sparking growing interest in mining these deposits. Since then, 18 private companies have applied for permits to explore and extract the gold. However, the state government has yet to grant formal approval for any mining operations.

Promising Diamond Reserves Identified

In addition to gold, Odisha also holds potential diamond reserves. In 2010, the world’s leading diamond producer, De Beers, conducted a survey that revealed Kimberlite and Lamproite formations—geological structures known to host diamonds—in Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, and Bolangir districts.

Kimberlite and Lamproite are varieties of micaceous peridotite, a magnesium-rich, silica-deficient rock type commonly associated with diamond deposits. Despite these promising findings, diamond mining activities in Odisha have not yet begun, as exploration efforts remain at the survey stage without any substantial steps toward extraction or commercialization.

Odisha’s Untapped Mineral Potential

The discovery of both gold and diamond reserves highlights Odisha’s immense potential as a mineral-rich state. However, unlocking this potential will require proactive measures from the government and relevant stakeholders. Responsible and sustainable mining operations could significantly contribute to the state's economic growth, job creation, and overall development.
