First Canopy Bridge In Odisha For Wildlife

First Canopy Bridge In Odisha For Wildlife

Odisha’s first canopy bridge for wildlife has been inaugurated on the State Highway connecting Barsuan with Tensa under Bonai Forest Division in Sundargarh district. The Bonai Forest Division in Sundargarh has come up with an innovative idea to save small wild tree animals moving across roads passing through dense jungles.

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in collaboration with Koira forest authorities has set up a special canopy bridge connecting high-rise dense trees on either side of the road inside the forest in Koira area.

The canopy bridge aims to prevent animals especially monkeys, squirrels and other tree animals from road hits due to hundreds of trucks and other transport vehicles plying on the roads in the iron and manganese-rich mineral hotbed.

Reportedly, as the road is passing through a dense forest, many wild animals such as monkeys, squirrels, etc. get killed by coming under heavy vehicles.

In view of this problem, under the guidance of the Regional Chief Conservator of Forests, Rourkela Circle, the canopy bridge has been introduced on an experimental basis in collaboration with SAIL.

As a result, the wild animals would move through the canopy bridge from one side to the other side without crossing the road and save their lives.
