Eco Retreat Set To Begin At Bhitarkanika And Hirakud

Following the massive success of the Konark Eco Retreat last year, the Odisha government has planned to host two similar events this year to revive the tourism industry post-pandemic.

The tourism department will kick off the three-month-long Eco Retreat festival at two major tourist attractions — Bhitarkanika National Park and Hirakud Dam — from December 1. The festival will be organised on the banks of Baitarani river at Nalitiapatia village at Bhitarkanika and at Jamadarpali airstrip near Hirakud dam.

During the festival, 15 luxury tents will be put up at Bhitarkanika to house tourists. The tents will be equipped with 24-hour water and electricity supply. There will also be parking facilities for the visitors near their respective tents.

The event will be held in public-private partnership mode and the district administration will organise cultural programmes, food festivals, trekking in the forest and tour of nearby beaches for the tourists.

Similarly, several events and activities including cycling, water sports and boat rides are planned for the Eco Retreat at Hirakud.

Locals and nature lovers have welcomed the initiative, stating that it will give impetus to the struggling tourism industry.

“The event would help to revive the tourism in the region affected due to the pandemic,” said Rajnagar District Forest Officer Bikash Ranjan Dash.

Director, Odisha Tourism, Sachin R Jadhav along with senior department officials have already conducted an inspection of the location for the camping site and took a preparatory review meeting.

The tourism department will soon start the online booking of the luxury tents, the price of which will be decided by the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC).
