CCTVs On NH 16 To Check Traffic Menace
Technology has made our lives simpler in many ways while solving our day-to-day problems.
With the rise of interconnected systems and data sharing in real time, we have been able to
make decisions faster, act quicker, and save lives in adverse situations. The Government of
Odisha has been in favour of employing technology in every field to provide better services to its
citizens.
It did it again by deciding to install CCTV cameras along the National Highway 16 to solve the
menace of increasing accidents and identifying vehicles plying with fake number plates. The
CCTV cameras will be installed between Rameswar in Khurda district and Panikoili in Jajpur
district, Transport Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda informed the media on Monday.
They will be installed at every 4-5 km along NH-16, he added. “We will identify the vehicles
moving at high speed beyond the speed limit issued by the Transport Department. As we have
the information about the plying of transport vehicles with fake registration numbers, we will
identify these vehicles with the help of the CCTV cameras and take appropriate action,” Panda
pointed out.
Panda further informed that the estimated cost of installing the CCTV cameras will be around
Rs 15 crore and the Commerce and Transport Department will finalize a tender very soon. He
also said the Transport Department has made it mandatory for the installation of GPS systems
in all public transport vehicles to track their locations as well as to ensure the safety of
passengers.
The use of tech solutions to penalize violators of traffic rules and protect human lives is a much
necessary step towards solving traffic problems. “It is an ambitious project and we have got
responses from 32 bidders in the tender process. The work for the installation of intelligent
camera systems will be taken up soon,” the Transport Commissioner said.
