Bargarh’s Dhanu Yatra To Celebrate Its Diamond Jubilee

The largest open theatre in the world ‘Dhanu Yatra’ of Bargarh is going to celebrate its diamond jubilee from December 27, 2022 till January 23, 2023. The major theme of this festival is based on Krishna Leela and his conquest of Mathura. It truly is a visual delight as the whole episode is depicted scene by scene giving a chance to the devotees to relish in the Leela of their lord, the supreme being Krishna. 


According to the sources, as many as 223 artists have evinced their interest to play various characters in the epic play. As many as 57 actors have applied to play the role of demon king Kansa, while 22 persons have applied to play the role of ‘Mahamantri’, four persons are keen to enact ‘Sartaki’ in the play. Similarly 10 persons have applied for Chanura Mustika, 17 for Akrura, 17 for Basudev, 14 for Narada, 7 for Ugrasen, and 8 persons for Debaki role. However, Gopal Sahoo, who used to play Kansa role, and two others were eliminated from the Dhanu Yatra as they have crossed 60 years of age.

Sources in the committee said that the selection of candidates for other roles will be held on November 7, 9 and 10 while the final selection of demon king Kansa will be held on November 10. According to the committee, artists will be selected by the jury on the basis of their demo performance to be held at Biju Patnaik Town Hall in Bargarh.
