Popular Odias who made it big in Bollywood!

Despite its significant contribution to the country over the past several decades, the State of Odisha has always remained an obscure identity across the international landscape. There are quite a number of people who made it big time in such a vast empire of Bollywood and made a mark!


This is a list of such people, who showed that they had it in them. They went all the way to Bollywood, earned a name and made the state of Odisha proud!


Sadhu Meher

Responsible for bringing Odisha on the map of Bollywood, this man won the National Award for the best actor in 1974. With super hits like Ankur, Gharaonda, Safed Haati and many others, he was considered as a brilliant actor in the ‘70s!

Nila Madhab Panda

Born in Sonepur, Nila Madhab Panda is an award winning director and has directed amazing movies like I Am Kalam, Broken Hills, Kaun Kitney Pani Mein and Jalpari.

Pitobash Tripathy

Famously known for his roles in I Am Kalam and Shor In the City, Pitobash Tripathy, is a versatile actor, belonging to Deuli, Nayagarh. He was brought up in Bhubaneswar.

Krishna Beura

Apart from SRK’s charisma and Akshay Kumar’s patriotism, another thing that stood out in Chak De India and Namastey London was the amazing voice of Krishna Beura that mesmerized us in the songs ‘Maula Mere Lele Meri Jaan’ and ‘Main Jahan Rahoon’! Born in Banki, Cuttack, he possesses a soulful voice!

Nandita Das

This multi-talented beauty has been spectacular in contemporary acting and has won international commendation for her work. She has done some fabulous work in Deepa Mehta’s movies Fire(1996), Earth(1998), Firaaq (her directorial debut), etc . and made Odisha proud.

Sona Mohapatra

An Indian singer, music composer and lyricist, Sona Mohapatra became famous for her song ‘Bahara’ in I Hate Luv Storys, and thereafter she hasn’t stopped! Recently, she made Odisha even prouder by singing the famous Sambalpuri song ‘Rangabati’ on Coke Studio.

Mira Nair

Indian American filmmaker based in New York City, Mira Nair, owns a production company, Mirabai Films, which specializes in films for international audiences on Indian society, whether in the economic, social or cultural spheres.

Chandrachur Singh

It’s quite difficult to believe that the handsome Macho in the film Maachis is an Odia guy! Belonging to Bolangir, Chandrachur has made Odisha proud with his superb acting in The Fire, Josh, Kya Kehna and Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiya!

Sulagna Panigrahi

Apart from acting in television, this beautiful actress has acted in Bollywood movies too such as Murder 2, Ishq Wala Love and Guru Dakshina. She was born in Berhampur.

Subash Sahoo

Remember Omkara, Kaminey, Khosla Ka Ghosla? No? Well, you must have definitely tapped your feet to the tune played throughout Once Upon A Time In Mumbai! Yes, Subash Sahoo, belonging to Kendrapada, is the man who adds tanginess to the movies and gives each scene his magical sound mixes!

Ramani Ranjan Das

A highly respected member of the technical fraternity of Bollywood and the man behind the camera, Ramani Ranjan’s brilliance is reflected in movies like 3 Idiots or Agent Vinod’s intricately shot action scenes! He had also captured our minds by Lage Raho Munnabhai’s ‘Gandhigiri’ and Johnny Gaddar’s ‘dark drama’!
